Editorial Reviews

The BRS for Embryology was a supplemental text that I found incredibly helpful. The book helps to make even the most confusing development stages easy to understand and learn. It helps to weed through the details and focus on the main concepts. I found this book to be truly helpful in studying and preparing for med school exams for my first year. I would recommend this to any student who feels confused or overwhelmed by developmental anatomy.

Product Description
BRS Embryology, 4th Edition is a succinct outline-format review for USMLE and course exams, with USMLE-style questions at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive USMLE-style examination at the end of the book. The book also includes radiographs, sonograms, computed tomography scans, and photographs of various congenital malformations. This updated edition has a new organization: pre-fertilization through the embryonic period; system by system; genetic abnormalities; and teratology. The chapter on structural chromosomal abnormalities has been substantially revised. This edition's review questions are in the clinical vignette-based format of the current USMLE. A companion Website offers the fully searchable online text and an interactive question bank.

A fantastic review of embryology.Out of 7 to 10 average embryology questions that appear on step1,this book easily helps you to answer 80 to 100%of them.A high yield book for a less represented subject.

By  "imrankhalid97"

Overall, a very good book for mastering the embryology part for the Step 1 test. No other embryology text is needed for the boards other than this. This book is far more sufficient. Just make sure you actually know the material from this BRS text to smooth sail this section on the USMLE exam! It is a must to have for Step 1.

Editorial Reviews

The material this goes through is great, concise, displayed well, properly bolded, and with good diagrams. The material covered in the lesson section is solid especially the question section. If you already have practice questions for the boards and just need a good review (or want to place out of biochemistry/molecular biology in med school), then this is probably the book for you. If you want a book that gives you a lesson plan with questions to prepare you for the boards, this IS that book.

Product Description
BRS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 4th Edition is an updated revision of a bestselling review, with an increased clinical focus, expanded molecular biology material, and several completely new chapters. The book outlines the important facts and concepts tested on the USMLE, within the context of physiologic functioning of the human body. Each chapter begins with a summary and ends with a high-yield summary to consolidate the material, so students can cover topics in a shorter time. Clinical vignette USMLE-style review questions, answers, and explanations appear after each chapter and in a comprehensive end-of-book exam. All the question material is also available online for electronic practice.

This is a good book regardless of the errors. I used it before each lecture to give me a good QUICK and concise run down on the topic at hand. The clinical correlations in the body of text, next to the relevant topic was more helpful than the previous editions. Many of the clinical correlations I remembered on the NBME test because of this book.

Just remember, this isn't a hardcore peer reviewed textbook. So there are probably some errors. I do remember a few questions that were incorrect, but I did not find it much worse than any other textbook I have used.

Overall, I wish I had this from day 1 of my molecules to cells portion of med school, instead of day 20. I say that because I spent so much time reading a lengthy textbook instead of this. It is worth it's weight in gold if you are NOT a chemistry/biology major and you need to learn biochemistry in a hurry.

I would recomend Lippincott's Illustrated review in case you don't like the BRS series. However, it doesn't have as many clinical correlations as the BRS does.

Editorial Reviews

This book is an excellent resource for persons both entering their first year course in Medical Physiology and for those second-year medical students preparing for USMLE Step 1. A concise, yet detailed text which emphasizes quite clearly the basic principles of Physiology. I am lucky to have had the author, Dr. Linda Costanzo, as a professor and my current advisor. However, having her review text is the next big thing! Detailed pictures and powerful tables and diagrams handsomely supplement her student-oriented presentation style of information. A particularly well written section concerning Renal Acid-Base Physiology, which is Dr. Linda Costanzo's specialty. Any medical student or person taking a Physiology course will not lose a dime by purchasing this book. It is well worth it, believe me!

Product Description
Thoroughly updated for its Fourth Edition, BRS Physiology is an excellent aid for students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. The book concisely reviews key physiological principles and includes clinical correlations throughout to emphasize connections between basic physiology and clinical medicine. Numerous illustrations, tables, and flow charts help students visualize material quickly and aid in long-term retention. End-of-chapter USMLE-style questions and a comprehensive end-of-book exam test the student's problem-solving skills, and clearly explained answers guide the student through the correct steps in reasoning. This edition features increased coverage of pathophysiology, new questions, and a new two-color design and artwork.

This book contains a large amount of high-yield information. It goes systematically through all major systems (i.e cell, CV, Renal, Respiratory, Endocrine, GI, and Neuro). Easy to read and comprehend with some great test questions. Perfect study aid to supplement your main textbook in your physiology course. And, of course, a great review for the Boards.

By  G. Prasad

This book is awesome, but I can still criticize it. I read it along with the little Guyton book, and used it as a main source a couple of days before the NBME, which we took at the end of our physiology class in medical school. I read the entire book in two days, and understood it all! It is a fast dirty way to study physiology that hits all the necessary points. However, it has its down points. The book is in bullet point format all the time. It became a little degrading to see point after point, which is why I used the pocket Guyton book. Guytons pocket book is another source that I highly recommend because it explains rather than bullet points, and if the bullet points in this book become too much for you, try pocket Guyton. Also, the sections of this book may not follow your class lecture. It can be unpleasant to search for what your studying. If the book had sections smaller than 30 pages it would help. Another word of warning, this book is build for medical school. This book is not intended as a source for PhD work, etc. However, if you are in med school, this is a necessary evil!

Editorial Reviews

This is a new edition of an established human gross anatomy review book that covers the material taught in medical school courses in a concise and well organized manner. It provides brief explanations of gross anatomy concepts and terms and organizes muscles, blood vessels, and nerves in helpful tables. ..Unique features include the outline format that allows readers to quickly review without being distracted by unnecessary detail; the tests at the end of each chapter and the comprehensive test at the end of the book in a format similar to the USMLE exam....This is a helpful tool for students preparing for gross anatomy exams. It also can function as a quick reference for healthcare practitioners. This new edition has added information on development as well as new test questions.

Weighted Numerical Score: 93 - 4 Stars!

Customer Reviews

I really think highly of most of the books in the BRS series. This book was an exception. BRS Physiology, BRS biochemistry, and BRS Pathology were outstanding and very pertinent to material tested on the USMLE. I even thought BRS pharmacology was pretty good despite others having mixed feelings about it. This book is by far the WORST in the BRS series that I have encountered.

Anatomy is not a heavily tested topic on USMLE, and the anatomy related questions are becoming more and more clinically based. This book lacked that type of focus. I found it difficult to read, with poor diagrams/illustrations, and filled with clinically irrelevant minutia. This book would probably be more interesting to those pursuing graduate degrees in anatomy...maybe as a review book for them.

So unless you have a particular interest in anatomy, this is NOT a good book for board review, or even as a supplement for medical school anatomy.

For board review "High Yield Anatomy" combined with "First Aid.." is sufficient.

For medical school anatomy, check out the books by Moore such as Clinically Oriented Anatomy and Essential Clinical Anatomy.
